Yikes. Things got ugly out there last night at the Ottawa 10k. I finished 9th overall (4th among Canadians) in 30:15.
I knew going into the race that I was at the tail, tail end of my season. My training since the 10,000m at Stanford a month ago hasn’t gone too smoothly. But I had myself convinced I was ready to rock one last time this spring.
I got out hard and led a small group containing myself , Eric Gillis, and Simon Bairu through the first few kilometers. I was running aggressively at that point, trying to keep a step up on Simon and Eric. Nearing 5k Matt Loiselle and Eric came past me. I knew at that point I’d have to dig deep and hold on. But neither my mind or body were up to the task. Those guys quickly gapped me and I was soon in big trouble. Rejean Chaisson and the Destroyer caught me at about 7.5k. I managed to hold onto Rejean til 800m to go. I tried to move past him at that point, but he had the speed and strength and easily put me away over the last 500m.
Not exactly how I was hoping to end my season. But the season did have many positives. So, I’ll walk away from it content, having set PB’s at 5000m, 10000m, and half-marathon.
Now it’s time for some R&R for a week or so, before heading back out to the office (Vancouver) to get down to business….
